 LUDWIG VANDEVELDE

Ludwig Vandevelde (°1957, Antwerpen) appears to consider art as the elaboration of process of mourning. The crisis of meaning within art goes hand in hand with a feeling of loss, - the legibility and direct transmission of meaning of the work of art seem to be lost forever. The works by Ludwig Vandevelde constitute an elaboration of this loss: they illustrate the despair and melancholy resulting from it. The problem of meaning and perception of art and beauty constitute the underpinning theme upon which his work is based.
On an emotional level, I'm looking for a connection with reality. When an artist puts an object in the world, the question is : which relation does it have with the world and which does it lack
?
This exhibition presents a selective survey of his work, consisting of drawings and water-colours on paper, sculptures in wood and plaster, as well as installations. However in the context of this show, the emphasis is put on sculpted still-lives and portraits.
